Editorial: The role of the New Climate Journal in 2025.

This year will be a challenging one for our planet and the environmental movement: The return of Trump, a divided political sphere and the momentum behind climate denialism all pose real threats. As a result, it’ll be more important than ever to share honest stories and opinion about our environmental crises, and that is why we’re back to make a difference in 2025.

After being created in October 2024, the NCJ began its important work on changing the media narrative around the climate crisis. We combined honest reporting with productive support and guidance for activists, hoping to inspire our readers to make a material positive difference. Our small team of writers began to form, united by a desire to raise awareness and start constructive climate debates around the evidence in front of us.

However, starting a news organisation from scratch, with no money or professional experience, was always going to be a huge challenge. Without a large volunteer cohort we struggled to continue to provide regular updates on the climate news of the day, and it was tricky early on to find a niche among the large mainstream media organisations, particularly as we were unable to have reporters on the ground for major climate events.

It would have been easy to give up on the project, especially when all of us had busy lives and other meaningful ways to make a difference to the world around us. But with a renewed emphasis on sharing the stories of writers passionate about the climate emergency, we are back. Instead of attempting to give updates on general news stories about the climate crisis which our readers can find elsewhere, we’ll be prioritising honest opinion and perspective from a variety of voices.

If you’re interested in expanding your understanding of our planet’s greatest threats, then subscribe and follow us on social media to stay updated on our work. If you think you’d like to give writing for us a try, then please also get in touch! We’re a welcoming and inclusive team, and we’re here to give you as much support or independence as you need to share your story. 2025 will challenge us, but it’s also an opportunity to mobilise our communities to take action. We are here to stay, and make that difference.
